Recovery straps are one of the most important pieces of kit on a recovery truck. Get it right and they’ll handle years of heavy use without complaint. Get it wrong, and you’re either replacing them prematurely, limiting what you can safely recover, or worse.

Kinetic vs Static: Understanding the Difference

This is the most common point of confusion, and it matters more than most operators realise.

Static straps

Also called tow straps or towing assistance straps. Static straps have minimal stretch; they’re designed for controlled, steady towing where you need a consistent, predictable connection between two vehicles. They’re the right choice when you’re towing a vehicle on a flat surface with traction, not when you’re trying to free a stuck one.

Kinetic straps

Also called snatch straps or winching assistance straps. Kinetic straps are built to stretch. They store elastic energy as the recovery vehicle moves forward, then release it as a controlled jerk that can break a stuck vehicle free. That energy transfer is what makes them effective for extraction, and it’s also why using them incorrectly is dangerous.

 

The golden rule: Never use a kinetic strap where a static strap is called for, and never use a static strap to try to snatch a stuck vehicle. They look similar but are not interchangeable.

 

UNDERSTANDING RATINGS: WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN

Every recovery strap has a rated capacity – the load it’s designed to handle safely. For straps, you’ll typically see this expressed as:

MBS (Minimum Breaking Strength) – the maximum load the strap has been tested to before failure. This is not the safe working figure; it’s the absolute limit.
Lashing Capacity (LC) – the safe working figure derived from the MBS. This is the number that matters for choosing the right strap for the job.

For practical purposes, the key question is: what’s the gross vehicle weight of the heaviest vehicle you’ll be recovering? The strap’s lashing capacity should comfortably exceed that figure. When in doubt, go higher – a strap rated above your needs costs marginally more and provides more meaningful safety margin.

 

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LENGTH

Strap length affects how you can use it on the job. Longer straps give you more flexibility in positioning, particularly on motorway or A-road recoveries where you need distance between vehicles. Shorter straps are easier to store and handle but can limit your options in tight situations.

Most operators running a general recovery truck will want straps across a range of lengths. A common working set might include shorter straps for close-quarters work and longer lengths for open-road extractions and motorway work.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING

Regardless of which type you’re buying, here’s what to check before you commit:

  • Certification – is the strap manufactured to a recognised standard?
  • End fittings – are the hooks, eyes, or loops appropriate for the recovery points on the vehicles you’ll be working with?
    Condition on delivery – stitching should be tight and even, webbing consistent with no thin spots or fraying, labels legible
    Storage and care – straps degrade faster when stored wet, dirty, or compressed under heavy kit; clean, dry storage significantly extends their working life

 

A NOTE ON REPLACEMENT

Straps don’t last forever, and knowing when to retire them is as important as knowing which ones to buy. Any strap showing signs of fraying, cuts, discolouration from chemical exposure, or damaged end fittings should come off the truck immediately. No recovery job is worth a strap failure.
